LISTENING TO FINAL BODY INSTALLERS

Freightliner develops relationships with final body installers like Beck Industrial, a San Antonio, Texas, based rear-discharge concrete mixer manufacturer, to design vocational trucks that upfit easily.

As a family-run business, father Jim Beck and brothers Frank and Tom are on a mission to provide their customers with durable, safe and reliable trucks. And they are the final body installers for Tex-Mix, one of our best Freightliner customers.

EASTERN CONTECH

SPEC'ING THE RIGHT BUSINESS FOUNDATION

Eastern ConTech, based in Sharon Springs, N.Y., builds truck and railroad scale foundations. Towing eight-ton loads from New York to South Carolina and Ohio, Eastern ConTech typically wore out pickups in a few years, and its maintenance and repair costs were significant.

All of that changed when Eastern ConTech general partners and brothers Mike and Bob Boehler saw a Freightliner M2 106. After a long talk with Freightliner Trucks vocational sales manager Mike Finney, the Boehlers went home and did a cost analysis: pickups vs. the M2, per mile, per year. "Freightliner blew the doors off the pickups,"" said Mike Boehler.

The company replaced its 16,000-lb. trailer with a 23,000-lb. trailer, increasing load capacity, and added a half-ton pickup chase vehicle, further improving efficiency. "Our whole operation got better because of the Freightliner M2 106," said Mike Boehler. "It allowed us to grow our business. That purchase just might be the best decision we've ever made."

Freightliner is the Right Fit for Jerr-Dan When it Comes to Upfit

When it comes to truck equipment manufacturers, few brands are as well-known and respected as Jerr-Dan, the Hagerstown, Md., based company that has earned more than 25 patents for its innovations in the tow truck industry.

According to Jeff Irr, director of sales with Jerr-Dan, customer feedback drives the company's engineering innovations. The Freightliner M2 106 cab configurations — day cabs, extended cabs and quad cabs — provide the choices tow operators need. Whether towing cars alone or carrying an entire family and their vehicle home safely, the Freightliner M2 106 can be customized down to the wheels. The flexible chassis layouts of the M2 106 allow Jerr-Dan to tailor everything including the fuel tank location, power takeoff pumps, suspensions and wheel bases.

Irr says that Freightliner trucks offer ease of access to cab components and simple wiring interfaces, which save time in the upfit process. When you upfit hundreds of trucks a year, saving time in the upfit process is critical to business performance.

"When we receive a Freightliner Truck, we know we're going to have little to no extended time to upfit the truck, so we can meet or exceed our customers' delivery expectations. Founded in 1972, Jerr-Dan manufactures vehicles in McConnellsburg, Pa. It has been a part of Oshkosh Corp. since 2004. Oshkosh designs and builds specialty trucks, truck bodies and access equipment in nine countries. The company employs 13,100 people, selling products and services in 130 countries around the world.

"One of the things we focus on is how we help the tower get home safe at night. They're working on the side of the highway late at night. It's extremely dangerous," Irr says. To assist tow truck operators, Jerr-Dan was the first to offer dual controls on its tow vehicles, so the lift can be operated safely from the non-traffic side. With the fastest carrier roll-back and pitching speeds, and a RAIL™ (Rear Awareness Indicator Lights) lighting system, Jerr-Dan provides towing companies the ability to quickly and safely remove a disabled or crashed vehicle.

POWERSOUTH

Helping Maintain the Line While Lowering RCO

PowerSouth is a generation and transmission cooperative headquartered in Andalusia, Alabama. They supply bulk power to their 20-member system in a service area along the southern United States. Maintaining the lines and restoring power when there's an outage are a part of their primary responsibilities. And they just added six new Freightliner® trucks to their 56-truck fleet to help them do that: a 122SD Heavy Hauler, one 114SD digger derrick, one 114SD bucket truck, two M2 106 service trucks, and a 108SD knuckle-boom crane.

For PowerSouth, a dependable truck isn't a luxury. It's requirement. "Dependability is very important, especially during an outage situation," says Chuck Dutton, the fleet maintenance supervisor at PowerSouth. "You've got to get the equipment there as soon as possible to get the electricity back on, and the last thing you need is a truck breaking down."

A dependable and productive truck also makes good business sense. Which is why PowerSouth doesn't just look at the upfront costs when adding to their fleet. They look at the Real Cost of OwnershipSM of the truck. "If you save $10,000 on the front end of a purchase, but it costs you $50,000 more in maintenance over the first five years, then that's not what you want," says Joe Armstrong, transmission operation and maintenance manager. Safety is PowerSouth's number one priority and is another factor that lowers their Real Cost of Ownership. Freightliner trucks help them achieve that. "When you've got vehicles this big, part of the safety factor is the guy's comfort level," says Joe Armstrong. "If they can see, if the truck handles well, if they have confidence in the vehicle, they're going to be a lot safer." Service technician Chris Houk agrees. "When you're sitting in the driver's seat you don't have to move to look over the hood," says Chris. "And the steering has a really tight turning radius so you can get to wherever you need to be."

So what's the future look like for PowerSouth? "We plan to purchase more Freightliner trucks. Our dealership, our rep, and the product, we've been very pleased with them," says Chuck Dutton. "They have been a very valuable asset to our fleet."
